Wartorn Lands

Session 1
Home in time for supper!

Date: 12.01.2016
Players: Torstein – Cyreal, Ingeborg – Sharr of the Wandering Storm, Robert – Thorax Bloodaxe, Ian – Leafgland Blandorel

We start out at the Wayward Hen where we’re asked by Estrild von Immersdorf to retrieve a sword which once belonged to one of her subordinates who had fallen in battle versus the moutain clans. In return she will make sure her quartermaster gives us some better equipment. We agree and head out, following the directions given by one of Estrilds subordinates, intent on making it back to the Wayward Hen by suppertime.

On our way up the mountain we spot two mountain clan members hiding in the bushes. Our cleric raises her claws and calls out to them in a friendly greeting, they respond by shooting her with an arrow. The group proceeds to kick the shit out of them, killing one and sending the other one running.

Continuing up the mountain Cyreal volunteers (is persuaded to) sneak ahead and scout the area, suddenly finding himself in the middle of seven more members of the local mountain clan. In surprise he sets most of them on fire before they stab him with their spears. The rest of the group runs in and cleans house, two of the mountain clan attackers running off, the rest dead. Cyreal is given a health potion and is back on his feet.

We continue up the mountain and spot a small camp. This camp is unaware of us butchering their scouts and Cyreal manages to broker a deal with one of them, trading a herbalism kit for the sword we were sent to retrieve. At this point four dragon knights appear, and kindly request the sword. Seeing as we don’t quite feel like fighting four dragon knights we comply with their request, returning to the Wayward Hen empty-handed.

We explain what happened to Estrild and she is sympathetic, noting that we did what we were asked and that it was probably for the best that we didn’t try to pick a fight with the dragon knights. We receive our reward (armor/weapons upgraded by 1) and supper.

Protect the Orcs!

Players: Therese – Valerina, Andre – Diero, Ian – Leafgland Blandorel, Robert – Thorax Bloodaxe, Ingeborg – Sharr of the Wandering Storm, Torstein – Cyreal

An emissary from Krag’Thar shows up at the Wayward Hen, seeking Thorax Bloodaxe. He tells Thorax that he is to bring his friends and come home as his uncle has a task for him.

The group travels, along with the emissary and his wagons, towards Krag-Thar. On the way they run into a group of disheveled ex-soldiers, who are desperate for food and on their way back home to Askaria. Ignoring the feeble attempt at an abush the former soldiers have tried setting up for them, the group elects to talk to them and share their food. One of the former soldiers tells them that he has an wealthy father in the capital of Askaria, who, if the group should contact him, will happily aid them in return for their kindness. The group brings the former soldiers along with them on their journey.

As the group reaches Krag’Thar, they are given a very warm welcome as the orcs and their kin welcome back Thorax Bloodaxe. There is also a bard-competition, which Val wins with her tale of how the group once faced down 100 dragonknights before electing to give away a sword out of the goodness of their hearts. She is rewared the bronze lute.

From Thorax’s uncle the group recieves a mission to escort two orc diplomats, the Firestone twins, to the Krag’Thar embassy in the capital of Askaria. Along with a wagon of treasures,

The Twins even sign the Cleric’s healing contract, offering to turn a house in Krag’Thar into a temple of Mafdet in return for the Cleric’s services on the way.

The journey to the Wayward Hen is fairly uneventful. Again Val tells the story of how the group faced down all the dragonknights of the world, to great success and much cheer, and Estrild von Immersdorf herself offers to cover their expenses for the night as a thank you for the entertainment.

The group continues on their journey, and as they traverse the forests, discover that they are about to be ambushed by a group of goblins. A group of goblins that are soon dead.

Further into the forest, the group sets up camp, despite hearing strange, oddly loud, hooting from the forest. A little bit into the 4th guard-shift a hungry owlbear charges poor Blandorel, who manages to shout “UT!” before he is nommed on by the owlbear. The rest of the group responds by attacking the owlbear back, and it is now regretting its dietary choices. In the end the cleric lands a critical guided bolt that explodes the owlbear into shiny glowy pieces of meat.

After this battle everyone in the group has signed a healing contract.

The group carries on with their journey, and are once again attacked as they reach the farmlands before the capital.

This time the attackers are human. Thorax gets mad and beats them into a pulp. Diero the Monk commits drive-by knee-cap destruction. Cyreal rains fire and then some more fire down upon them. Val makes them feel bad about their choices in life. Sharr makes them nervous about lightning. And Blandorel melts their brains. In the end no attackers are left standing and one one of them the group finds a note saying:
“Stop the diplomats from reaching their destination. Destroy this note after reading.” Signed with an Askarian Coat-of-Arms. This note is given to the diplomats.

Finally the group reaches the Capital. Here the gates are closed and the guards are demanding payment to let them in. However, after Val turns on her charms (that is magical charm person), the guards lets them in without any fuss.

The group reaches the “AMBARRSADE” where they are greeted warmly and rewarded for a job well done.

Session 3
Networking

Players: Andre Diero, Torstein Cyreal Ingeborg Sharr of the Wandering Storm, Robert Thorax Bloodaxe

At the AMBARRSADE the group is asked by the Firestone twins to aquire certain contracts on behalf of the AMBARRSADE.

Things requested are trade-agreements for the following items:
-Meat
-Grain and grain products
-Drink
-Furniture

Plus a blessing from the local church of the AMBARRSADE so an opening banquet and party can be held, and the local King and Queen can be invited for elbow rubbing.

The group is also asked to inquire about local opposition to the current rule and any other shady elements it might be worth getting on good terms with.

The group agrees and without much of a plan walks out of the city, heading to the largest farm they see. This of course is the King’s own farm. And while the people at the farm mostly have their hands full with covering the Royalties and the Courts needs the groups does acquire some things. Namely: Royal drinks, beer, mead and assorted beverages, directions to the bakers guild, to the guild of Carpenters and directions to a farm than can act as a go-between for acquiring necessary meat-products.

After leaving the Royal Farm, the group decides to split up. Cyreal and Thorax heads towards the farm they were given directions to (take a left at the big rock, go past the first farm as it’s in the SHADE, go to the second farm), where they acquire a contract for meat products. While Diero and Sharr heads back to town to talk to The Guild of Carpenters and the Guild of Bakers. Both groups successfully complete their goals and meet up again afterwards. Stopping by the local market to secure a contract for deliveries of vegetables to the AMBARRSADE.

The group then head to the Church of Irnus and have a chat with the Cardinal, ensuring that the AMBARRSADE gets blessed.

The group then heads for the docks. While Diero elects to walk around on his own for a while, the rest of the group heads to a specific tavern that I don’t have the name for right now. There they notice a rather shady looking group of mariners. Who, after the group introduces themselves politely, challenges Thorax to a fist fight. Thorax accepts and fights a rather foreign looking fellow. Thorax loses the battle, but wins the mariner’s hearts. And the group sits down to chat with the mariners.

Meanwhile, someone tries to ambush Diero, only to find out that you don’t ambush a Monk, Monks ambush you. After dispatching his would be assailants, Diero finds an unfamiliar coin on one of them, then heads to the Tavern to meet up with the rest of the group.

At the Tavern the group finds that people who carry coins like the one Diero has found tend to go missing, also to look for a certain mark (don’t remember what it was), if they want to contact the black market and local flavor.

At this point a group from The Force of Midnight shows up to do a minor shake-down on the tavern and enforce the curfew on the docks. They are however friendly when they learn that the group are emissaries from the AMBARRSADE, and don’t see the coin Diero hides. However the group is sent back to the AMBARRSADE, there is a curfew after all.

Session 4
The Plot Thickens

Players: Andre Diero, Ian Leafgland Blandorel, Ingeborg Sharr of the Wandering Storm, Therese Valerina, Torstein Cyreal, Robert Thorax Bloodaxe.

3 weeks has passed since the last session. The Firestone twins have grown disconnected and strange. They’ve stopped sending reports back to KragThar, they’ve stopped talking orcish, they are no longer comfortable being alone with the PCs and they’ve seemingly become devoted followers of Irnus.

Officially they claim this is all to blend in better at court, but as they no longer seem confident in even their childhood friend Thorax Bloodaxe, the group grows suspicious.

Valerina checks the ambassadors for magical influence, but find little evidence that something is wrong. She does however notice that they are carrying magical rings (which they’ve done since we first met them) and that the embassy chef has a magical knife that keeps the food he prepares from being dangerous to eat.

Thorax asks Oxgrim the ABARRSADE Guard to keep an eye on the twins, which is done by having Oxgrim’s son Arnstein follow them around.

Sharr takes a trip to the Church of Irnus to check what they’ve got to say about Irnus, mainly she just figures out they are a bit more fanatic than what seems healthy.

Valerina decides to infiltrate the Court to see if she can find the reason for the twins behaviour. Something she manages by becoming the warm-up act for the king’s speech at a coming party. Along with Diero she attends the party and mingles with the gentry. They don’t learn much new from the crowd, other than that the gentry now have a completely new view on orcs as being far more civilized than previously anticipated. While Valerina holds a very popular and distracting performance however, Diero sneaks off to see what else he can learn from the Castle. He finds his way to the royal library where he discovers that GASP! Cardinal Pathos is the King’s cousin.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group heads out to find the local resistance. Looking for the lily they had been told about by the smugglers they encountered last session. At the docks they find what they are looking for, and after bluffing their way in and talking their way out of a fight, they manage to make peaceful contact. The resistance is lead by a former paladin named Talis and a rogue named Rath.

The group have a chat with the resistance. Learning that also the resistance is suspicious of the Cardinal, but no one knows quite what’s going on. They make a deal to grant asylum to 3 of the resistance’s members in Krag Thar and also to trade messages back and forth through two runners from the resistance that are also working at the ABARRSADE.

Once Valerina and Diero returns from the castle and tell the rest of the group what they’ve found, this information is forwarded to the resistance.

Three days later it is time for the AMBARRSADE to be blessed by Cardinal Pathos. The gentry arrives, it’s a big party, the king and queen are there.

During the ceremony, the more alert members of the group notices that there is something wrong with what Cardinal Pathos is doing. And Leafgland (who actually understand infernal) realizes that the Cardinal is not blessing the AMBARRSADE in the name of Irnus, but in the name of the God of Death. He warns the rest of the group by talking inside their head and also relays the message to one of the runners from the resistance (the baker’s boy).

The group decides to play it cool. Valerina once again makes herself popular by performing (and also sneaks in a hymn to Mafdet in the performance).

The day after the group sends several messages to the resistance that they request the resistance relay to Estrild von Immersdorf at The Wayward Hen. The messages contain a warning to Crixus in Krag’Thar about what’s going on and that the church of Irnus might be considering expanding there, and a message to the priests of Mafdet in Felandaril that Cardinal Pathos of the Church of Irnus in Irnusia is actually a follower of the God of Death and can you please send help to cleanse this place and maybe smite him a bit.

The resistance does not know what they coin with a full-moon on one side and a half-moon on the other side, that Diero found on one of his attackers is.

The group then goes to the Church of Irnus’s cathedral to ask around, otherwise electing to play it cool. There they notice that the cathedral is far older than the Church of Irnus, yet the acolyte they talk to claim it’s always been devoted to their order. They also learn (through a detect good and evil-spell) that the Cathedral still somewhat holy (a weak glow), the Altar devoted to Irnus lies in darkness,. The holy symbols the acolytes wear also appears as holy.

Session 5
Do they know that we know that they know that we know?

Players: Andre Diero, IanLeafgland Blandorel, Ingeborg Sharr of the Wandering Storm, Robert Thorax Bloodaxe, Therese Valerina, Torstein Cyreal

The session starts at the Cathedral of Irnus where the group was conducting their investigations. The group decides to stay and watch the Mass held by Cardinal Pathos. During mass many things are revealed, mainly that the cathedral has many fancy columns and art-works, but maybe more relevant, Valerina notices that Cardinal Pathos is using hand-signals to communicate with someone in the crowd while holding his speech, she does however, not see who it is. The mass is also very non-religious, focusing mainly on how horrible Askaria is, and also, how potentially dangerous Ethad is.

The next day rumor starts circulating town that there’s a new Embassy. This one with people from Ethad. And they are weird, and very small, also the ambassador has a very young mistress. The group is ordered to attend a banquet at the new embassy, which they do. There they have a chat with the Ambassador of Ethad Merimas Silverstring, and are introduced to his daughter Hiltrude. The group rubs elbows and plants the seeds of a rumor that there’s a death cult operating in the city, trying to see if they can spark the interest of any potential allies with the new embassy. The group also advises the new ambassador to get badges with the symbol of Irnus for himself and his people, so communicating with the locals will be easier.

The new ambassador and his people is invited to brunch at the AMBARRSADE the following day.

After their contact with the Resistance has failed to show up several days in a row, the group (everyone besides Blandorel who is busy shopping) decides to investigate what’s happened to him. Following directions they got from the baker’s guild and after some talking to cats and small children the group finds the boy’s home.

The apartment is covered in blood and there are clear signs of a struggle, the Force of Midnight is the primary suspect. They also notice that there are clothes missing for a woman. Asking the neighbor girl, they find that the dad was “mean” and she never saw the mom except for through the door, she had red hair and pale skin. Otherwise it’s unknown what has happened to the boy.

An orc-style brunch is held for the Ambassador of Ethad and his entourage at the AMBARRSADE. Moments before it starts however, Hiltrude pops through the window of the groups room to reveal that she’s Ethad’s spymaster, and in contact with the resistance. She tells the group about how the Cult of Sotos operated in Ethad before they wiped it out there. And how the cult is known to make use of a poison that makes people paranoid and easy to influence. The group suspects this is what has happened to the Firestone twins. And we discuss if it’s an option to kidnap them for detoxing and just bugger the hell out of Frogtown, but elect to not do so. Electing to stay and work on a proper solution to the problem instead.

During brunch there is much drinking, false singing, some teaching of orcish customs to non-Krag’Thar orcs and Oxgrim intimidates a patrol from the Force of Midnight who walks too close to the AMBARRSADE. Sharr is also approached by two followers of Mafdet who reveal themselves to be working for Hiltrude.

The next day the group decides to split up. Diero, Valerina and Sharr head to the pubs to make a name for themselves. The plan is to get popular and well-known enough that it won’t be too easy to just make them disappear. Their show is largely popular, moving from pub to pub, but the talk on the town seems to be the same wherever they go. Rising xenophobia towards Ethad.

Meanwhile Leafgland, Cyreal and Thorax go back to the Cathedral to watch yet another mass. Thorax realizes that there’s actually two different sculptors that have worked on the columns in the cathedral. Leafgland hears someone chanting in infernal. Listening intently he realizes it’s the Cardinal (regular priest is holding the sermon), and he is sacrificing someone to Sotos. Leafgland then decides to use his ability to talk into the head of people to give the Cardinal a message going “You call this a sacrifice!!!? SACRIFICE DENIED”.

The next day we learn that a whole bunch of resistance people have been executed during the night.
